Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the PRactice?
A. The PRactice, is a student-run group within the School of Communication’s PRSSA that performs real-client work for many different companies, organizations and events. It is based on the structure of most public relations agencies. The PRactice’s student CEOs sign agreements with community or campus clients to handle PR functions based on client needs. Every client project will be led directly by a student who will report to The PRactice CEOs.
Q. How do I become a member?
A. You must first fill out an application offered by The PRactice. After clients are secured, the applications will be reviewed and students will be assigned to a team as staff members of The PRactice. Depending upon individual interests, students are assigned to a project team where together the team will complete work for the client. The deadline to apply is October 9th, 2009.
Q. How much of a time commitment will it be?
A. While this is based on client needs and deadlines imposed by the client, we try to limit the expected number of hours as we do understand that students’ schedules are very busy. There will be some weeks where no time commitment is needed; however, if a client’s real business depends upon student participation we expect students to be flexible enough to dedicate sufficient time to the project to “get the job done.” Students should allot at least 5 hours per week to work on projects.
Q. What practical experiences or skills will I learn?
A. You will learn a variety of skills similar to what you would learn in a public relations agency internship. In addition to PR skills such as event planning, media relations, publication writing and strategic planning, you will learn skills such as time management, organization and working in a group setting.
Q. What previous experience do I need?
A. The most important qualities you need to succeed in The PRactice are dedication and commitment to the project and the client. The success of the client’s business or organization will be partially dependent upon fulfilling your commitment to the campaign.
Q. How do I get involved now?
